Accessible Form Error Message Builder
Create a clearer inline form error, linked error-summary item and accessible HTML starting point without sending form details anywhere.
Turn a field label and validation requirement into a specific inline error message, an optional error-summary link and editable HTML. The builder is designed for content and development teams reviewing a form’s failure states.
Preparing the interactive tool…
This interactive tool requires JavaScript. Enable JavaScript and reload the page to use it.
How to use the builder
- Enter the exact visible label used for the field.
- Choose the kind of validation problem.
- Add a concise correction when the default wording is not specific enough.
- Choose whether to include an error-summary link.
- Copy the HTML starting point and adapt its IDs, names and classes to your form.
- Test the completed form with keyboard, screen-reader, zoom and mobile workflows.
What a useful error message includes
- The affected field’s visible label.
- A plain-language description of the problem.
- A correction or example when a format requirement is not obvious.
- Programmatic association between the control and message.
- A summary link when submission reveals several errors.
Limitations
The generated markup is a starting point, not a complete form component or WCAG conformance test. Your framework may require different attributes and focus handling. Translated messages need review by someone who understands the language and context. Client-side checks never replace secure server-side validation.
Privacy
The tool runs in your browser. The field labels and guidance you enter are not sent to or stored by Digital Hub Zone. Do not paste real customer submissions, passwords or other sensitive information.
Supporting guidance
Read Accessible Web Forms: Labels, Instructions and Error Messages for the wider design and testing process. You can also use the Link-Text Accessibility Checker to review summary links and the Colour Contrast Checker for visible error states.
